Posidonius – 2005 03 15
feature Posidonius (Rukl 14, 31.8N, 29.9E), named after a Greek philosopher, geographer, and astronomer from the second century BC.
It sets on the Eastern border of Mare Serenitatis in the Northeast quad of the moon. To me, it was a very beautiful crater with a fractured floor of craterlets C & A as well as a system of rilles. It’s approximately 95-99km wide with high walls.
To the South of Posidonius, Chacornac looked liked semi crushed with possibly a rille system and crater in it as well. Once I got inside, I read up on it further and to my excitement, it did indeed have both! Evidently Chacornac’s slopes were crushed by Posidonius (according to VMA)…it being an older crater than Posidonius.
An area of interest to me was to the North and South of Posidonius. There appeared to be veins running in both directions from the crater, as maybe you can see from my drawing. VMA doesn’t show them, but if you have a look in Rukl, they are very clearly seen and I would assume is showing the beauty of Mare Serenitatis’ floor.
Posidonius A: 11km crater in the center of Posidonius
B: NE edge of Posidonius
J: above B, NE 22km
O: not found in VMA, but is a small crater just on the Northern edge of Posidonius
M: above O, 10km
P: 15km NW
Daniell: 31km, above J
